I think we can all agree that this new year/decade has been off to quite a bumpy start. The past few weeks have taken us through a journey of emotions and worries. Hopefully, moving forward the waters will be calmer. What we do know is that the only thing we have control over is ourselves – if we can learn to navigate and still the waters within ourselves, hopefully we will be better equipped to gain more meaning and resilience to whatever life throws our way.
One way we can take this opportunity to look within, grow, and learn is through self-help books.
Below are several books recommended by the TGR family, with love. They are not ranked in any particular order. We hope you explore them. Please let us know what you think!
1. The Four Agreements – by Don Miguel Ruiz
The Four Agreements explores elements of Ancient Toltec beliefs and shares wisdom that we can apply to hold ourselves more accountable to the story we tell in our minds. It shares the self-limiting beliefs that hold us back and cause suffering, and what we can do to live a life of true mental freedom. These include the following:
· Be impeccable with your word
· Don’t take anything personally.
· Don’t make assumptions.
· Always do your best.
This book is a short read, and it does a great job of bringing us ancient wisdom on complex topics in a way that is digestible. This is something you can read on your commute to or from work, but I would recommend reading it when you have some time to rest– like at the end of your day.
2. You Are A Badass – by Jen Sincero
This is truly one of the best books I have ever read. I have read it multiple times, and am re-reading it now to start off my mindset strong and positive at the beginning of this new year. The author is funny and relatable, and she truly puts big, abstract concepts into a very conversational format. She also adds plenty of funny personal anecdotes about her journey that are enjoyable. The book describes ways to truly step into who you are, find your purpose, and use your inherent value to live the life of your dreams and in turn make an impact.
3. The Secret – by Rhonda Byrne
This book was written based on the film of the same name (which is featured on Netflix). This book discusses the hidden power that you have within you and how you can tap into it at any moment in order to improve your money, health, relationships, and happiness. Many have agreed that this book has been very influential and life-changing for them. In this book, you will learn more about the Law of Attraction and how to apply it to your life to live that of your dreams.
4. Tuesdays with Morrie – by Mitch Albom
Tuesdays with Morrie will put you in your feels, so be ready for that! But it is definitely worth it, and it will most likely have you reflecting on your life and the meaning you give it. In this book, Mitch Albom describes his conversations with his mentor and teacher, Morrie Schwartz. He would spend time with his college professor in his final days, as his professor had an illness that was progressively getting worse. This is the collection of gems he collected in those meetings. Hopefully, there is something here you can carry with you and that can help you in your own life.
